I really enjoyed Dan's article in Campaign and the passion that comes through about the work they do.
There are many reasons I have spent the last 10 years at an independent agency - way too many to list. The key ones for me, however, have been the freedom to make decisions - bold decisions - and the ability to say no to clients and pitches. The main reason is the chance to do Great work with Great clients of all sizes (from start-ups to Tier 1 tech vendors).
One of our strategic pillars at Kingpin is agility. For our clients this is key. We can be flexible enough not to work to rigid processes, to enable our clients to achieve results. I remember my old network agency days where everything took so long. In the modern world we live in, that just doesn't fit.
There is, of course, a place for agencies of all shapes and sizes but I know where I belong and can continue to make the most difference for clients.
What independence doesn’t provide in terms of, well, loads of money, it more than makes up for in terms of freedom to be what we want to be, not what a network boss thinks we should. Fortunately – deep breath – as well as weird, one of the other things we are is seriously fucking good – now more than ever.
